Yard sale do's and don'ts:

DO'SDONT'S
Find friends or family to team up with.
Not only does this arrangement mean you have more stuff to sell and more variety in sizes and types of things offered, it also means you have more help. Divvying up the responsibilities between 2 or 3 people makes a garage sale much more manageable. Plus, it just makes it more fun when you're doing it with friends and family!
Do not use a cash box. Keep your money on you at all times
Be prepared.
Get plenty of singles / coins ready to make change. If possible, price items and stage displays / tables the night before so that you don’t have to rush around in the morning.
Do not bad-mouth your items
Clearly Mark Your Prices
It's much more efficient to put price stickers on everything. Stickers with a variety of prices can be found at dollar stores, etc. and make the task much faster & easier. Instead of having to make up prices on the spot, people will know exactly how much something is. In addition, some people are too shy to ask the price of an item, so you'll lose a sale if an item isn't marked.
Do not bad-mouth your neighbors items
Use Marketing Tricks
Put signs and/or balloons at your corner to make sure customers know there is a sale down your street. Plan the layout of your sale so there is a flow, and customers can easily get to all items.
Do not hold items for prospective return buyers.
Introduce Yourself
Go out of your way to welcome new guests arriving; then give them space to browse on their own. Chat if they’re chatty, but don't scare off the shy ones.
Don't forget to have fun and socialize....it's not just about selling stuff; it's about sitting out a few chairs, introducing yourself to neighbors, or chatting with folks you;ve not seen recenty. The potential to make new friends makes the yard sale is as much a social win as it is a financial one. Enjoy!
Price Things to Sell
When people go to a garage sale, they expect to pay yard sale prices. Unless something is brand-new with the tags on, don't try to price anywhere near retail value. If you see several people look over an item and put it back down, it may be that the price is too high. Be willing to bargain, and mark things down as time passes.
Don't forget the Cookies & Lemonade (or Coffee, Hot Chocolate, etc. )
What better way to teach your children entrepreneurial skills and let them earn a little money in the process than to have them set up their own little stand at the sale.
DO take pictures of your sale and send them to president@myorha.org to be included in the Newsletter or Website
